Prelude and Dance for solo flute, solo alto flute and flute quartet (2 C flutes, alto and bass) by Howard J. Buss was composed during the Fall of 2002 for Nora Lee Garcia and the 2003 Florida Flute Fair. This captivating sextet features two solo players with a colorful and vibrant flute ensemble accompaniment. The dramatic Prelude is followed by the spirited Dance, which is characterized by zesty Latin rhythms. Prelude and Dance was named winner of the 2004 Newly-Published Competition of the National Flute Association.

Prelude and Dance was premiered by Nora Lee Garcia, Mary Karen Clardy, Lee Lattimore, Diane Boyd Schultz, Andrea Redcay, and Brian Luce on January 30, 2003 at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. Two days later it was performed at the Florida Flute Association’s State convention in Altamonte Springs by the same ensemble.
