Flute Sonata Op. 120 for flute and piano by Edwin York Bowen

Born in Crouch Hill London in 1884, York Bowen was the youngest of three sons of the owner of the whiskey distillers, Bowen & McKechnie. He showed remarkable talent from an early age and, when only eight years old, was the soloist in a performance of Dussek’s Piano Concerto. He won the Erard Scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music at the age of fourteen, where he studied piano with Tobias Matthay and composition with Frederick Corder. He was a prolific composer who wrote many instrumental duos, chamber music, piano music, four symphonies, four piano concertos, concertos for the horn, violin and viola as well as music for organ, harp, songs and educational music.
