Dating back to the 9th century, the flute is the oldest known woodwind instrument. Composers throughout history have written notes for this instrument, and even today the flute is an integral part of almost every type of music/ There is a reason for its longevity – the flute has a unique power to hypnotize and delight. Its lower register can be haunting and melancholy, yet, in an instant, it can become playful and buoyant. Composing music for the flute is a challenge, simply because it is capable of producing so many varied, colorful sounds. My mission in writing these arrangements was to explore and exploit the colors and textures of the flute ‘sound’.

The tunes selected for this volume have proven themselves to be important and lasting and used by many denominations for all types of worship services. The arrangements, written with the intermediate player in mind, cover a variety of styles. While each setting is designed for worship, I tried to make them interesting enough to be included on a concert or recital program.

I must express heartfelt thanks to my dear friend, Judy Nishimura, for providing a backboard for me throughout the process of completing this collection. A fine musician and flautist, Judy gave me invaluable perspective from the player’s point point of view, and I’m confident that her input improved the quality of these settings immeasurably.

Enjoy!
