My friends are glad this collection finally came to pass. You can probably tell that I am left-handed, or at least a little in left field. These cartoons are very inside (not farside) so, when I speak of conical “boors,” don’t expect your next door neighbor to get it. My drawings simplify and personify the flute to accommodate my catty zingers and decidedly different perspective. One of my favorite ways to enjoy cartoons is to make up several captions and let people choose their favorite. Some of the limericks even try to teach music in an off the wall way. This little book could be an unusual gift for music teachers, especially if they have a waiting room. There is even a page of musician jokes in the back. Write in your own! I feel flutists are just sitting around waiting to exhale and need their funny bone tickled. If you can’t relate to me, maybe my book could at least be a coloring book for your kids.

I hope you’re not half as crazy as I am. Ask my wife, flutist Beverly Vance, because she has to live with (and edit) me. Humor is contagious, at least that’s what I read in Time magazine.

May “The Farce” be with you,
Howard Vance
