  • Celtic Music for Flute

Celtic Music For Flute by Jessica Walsh contains 44 tunes for flute which can be played solo or with a chord instrument. This great collection includes tunes from Scotland, Ireland, England, Wales, and the Isle of Man. The melodies were chosen from more than four hundred years of Celtic music. Most of the pieces have been extended with variations, which make the tunes a more suitable length for performances and are a lot of fun for the flutist to play. In addition, they will introduce the beginner to the joys of improvising in Celtic music, in which ornamenting and augmenting melodies is a tradition.Every tune in the book is included on the digitally mastered CD. Though the tunes are very effective as solo material, Jessica chose to record most of them with guitarist Allan Alexander. Allan has rendered the chords artfully, and the result is a really lovely CD which is a pleasure to listen to. For the player who is new to Celtic music, the recording will give insights into the melodies, and it will allow the flutist who has no access to a chord instrument to hear the harmonic progressions. For those who know and love these wonderful tunes, it will be a joy to hear them played by two musicians who obviously love to play this music together.

  • Celtic Music for Flute Vol. 2

Following on from Jessica’s hugely successful book Celtic Music for Flute, she has produced a Volume 2 which contains 46 pieces ranging from lovely portraits to lively jigs. They come from traditions including Irish, Scottish, Welsh, and Manx, and were gathered from various sources: among others, manuscripts written for bagpipe, lute, mandora, fiddle, and voice. The unique personality and sound of the flute complements them all. A few of the tunes are more than 400 years old; some are new. All have that inexplicable but necessary magic, the quality which draws the flutist to begin the tune again, just one more time…

Whether a march, lilt, love song, or lament, each melody in this collection is a gem; many are sure to become cherished favorites. The accompanying Play-Along CD includes all the tunes in the same order in which they appear in the book. This CD features separate channels for flute and guitar so that the flutist can play along with the guitar accompaniment. Allan Alexander artfully renders the chords on guitar, providing a harmonic tapestry over which the melodies float.

  • Coleman, Valerie – Fanmi Imen

The title Fanmi Imèn is Haitian Creole for Maya Angelou’s famous work, Human Family. Both the musical and literary poems acknowledge differences within mankind, either due to ethnicity, background, or geography, but Angelou’s refrain: “we are more alike, my friends, than we are unlike,” reaffirms our humanity as a reminder of unity. Coleman’s work draws inspiration from French flute music blending with an underlying pentatonicism found in Asian traditions, a caravan through Middle Eastern parts of the world merging with Flamenco, and an upbeat journey southward into Africa with the sounds of Kalimba (thumb piano). Fanmi Imèn was commissioned by the National Flute Association for its 2018 High School Soloist Competition.

  • Debussy, Claude – Syrinx (La Flute de Pan)

Syrinx is undoubtedly among the works that are immediately associated with Debussy. The piece, which was given its first performance under the title La flûte de Pan, was composed in 1913 as incidental music to a dramatic poem by Gabriel Mourey. In the central scene Pan is playing a reed flute, which is actually the nymph Syrinx. Pan is, however, invisible to the other nymphs and to the audience. In order to reflect the staged situation, the dedicatee Louis Fleury used to play the piece behind a screen when he played it in concert. It was only published by Jobert in 1927, following Debussy’s death; its popularity has remained unsurpassed to this day.
