Announcing PRFS Competition Winners

Flute Specialists, Inc. is happy to sponsor the Puerto Rico Flute Symposium Young Artist Competition. This competition was open to all flute players from age 18 to 35. The first place winner received a $500 cash prize sponsored by Flute Specialists, a solo performance with the Puerto Rico Festival Orchestra, and a full scholarship to the 2022 symposium. The second place winner received a $200 cash prize sponsored by Flute Specialists, a 45-minute recital at the 2022 symposium and a full scholarship to that event. The third place winner received a $100 cash prize sponsored by Flute Specialists and a 30-minute recital at the 2022 symposium in addition to a full scholarship for that event. We are thrilled to announce these three flutists.

1st Place

Martin Godoy graduated from the University of North Texas with his DMA studying under Terri Sundberg, James Scott, and Elizabeth McNutt. He is the first-prize winner of the Linda Chesis Young Artist Competition (YAC) (2020), Myrna Brown Flute Competition (2018), Austin Flute Society YAC (2019), Maverick Solo Flute Competition (2019), and the UNT Concerto Competition (2018). He was runner-up in the PRISMA Concerto Competition (2019) and received second-prize for the Mid-South YAC (2018), Mid-Atlantic YAC (2018), and Flutissimo YAC (2016). He maintains his flute studio in the Dallas area where he also teaches dance, is a member of Flutes Unlimited, and subs for the Dallas Winds. 

2nd Place

Jessica Schury recently completed her degree in Music Performance (MM) from Stony Brook University and previously completed her degrees in Music Performance and Music Education (BM) from West Chester University of PA. Her principal teachers include Carol Wincenc, Dr. Kimberly Reighley and Robin Kani. This fall, she will pursue her doctorate at the University of North Texas in the studio of Terri Sundberg. Jessica has been awarded first prize in several regional and university competitions including the Pennsylvania MTNA Young Artist Competition and the Philadelphia Flute Society Collegiate Young Artist Competition. As an avid chamber musician, Jessica has performed internationally and throughout the U.S., most recently at the Flute New Music Consortium (2020). As an educator, Jessica is the co-founder of Flute Foundations, an online community for students of all ages to learn at the highest level from home.

3rd Place

Passionate about performing and educating, Tierney is currently pursuing a Doctor of Music degree at Indiana University where she serves as associate instructor of the flute studio. She has attended various programs including Music Academy International, the William Bennett Summer Flute School, and the Pender Island Flute Retreat. Tierney has also performed solos in various new music festivals, including the Midwest Composers’ Symposium and Electronic Music Midwest.

Tierney’s teachers include Thomas Robertello, Dr. Conor Nelson, and Joel Tse. She has performed in masterclasses for Marianne Gedigian, William Bennett, Lorna McGhee, Alberto almarza, Nicolas Duchamp, Nina Asssimokopoulos and soo-Kyung Park. She holds performamce degrees from Indiana University (M.M. ’21) and bowling Green State University (B.M. ’19), where she graduated summa cum laude.
